Description from the seller

It is a 19th-century Renaissance-style jug that displays the full historicist theatricality proper to the era, when European workshops reinterpreted the ornamental language of the Renaissance with a mix of technical virtuosism and decorative exuberance. The bronze, worked with deep modeling, becomes here an ideal support for mythological iconography that runs through the piece as a visual narrative.

The body of the jug is organized into registers of reliefs: classical faces, mascarons, vegetal scrolls, and fantastic figures that evoke the Greco-Roman world. Each motif is delineated with precision, creating a play of light and shadow that brings the surface to life. The neck, tall and stylized, rises with architectural elegance, while the spout opens like a leaf or petal, following the ornamental aesthetics of the Renaissance reinterpreted by the nineteenth century.

The handle, perhaps the most expressive element, curves with an almost sculptural gesture. At its top appears a mythological figure — a face, a spirit, a hybrid being — that acts as the jug’s symbolic guardian. This type of handles, laden with narrative, were highly valued in nineteenth-century French and Italian manufactories, where functionality yielded to visual impact.

The base, wide and decorated with vegetal motifs reminiscent of acanthus leaves, provides stability and reinforces the sense of a ceremonial piece. The whole conveys solidity, luxury, and a clear intent to engage with classical antiquity, but filtered through the Romantic sensibility of the nineteenth century.

It is a jug that not only serves as a decorative object: it is a small Renaissance reinterpretation sculpture, a fragment of mythology turned into metal.
