Description from the seller

Chokwe Anthropomorphic Neckrest – Angola. This elegant antique neckrest constitutes a remarkable testimony to Chokwe classic sculpture. The kneeling female figure, dignifiedly supporting the curved crossbar, is treated with great sobriety, while the face with half-closed eyes and delicately carved features conveys calm and serenity. The whole is enhanced by an exceptional mahogany-brown patina, deeply polished and softened by decades of use, where natural signs of wear reveal the piece’s great age and authenticity.

Beyond its utilitarian function, intended to preserve elaborate hairstyles during sleep, the neckrest held an important place in the daily life and symbolic world of the Chokwe. A prestige personal object, it accompanied its owner throughout life and could be passed down as a precious heirloom. The quality of its sculpture, the elegance of its proportions and, above all, its remarkable patina of use, gained over time and handling, make this example particularly seductive for any enthusiast of ancient African art.
