The coat of arms of The Bahamas features the Santa María, the flagship of Christopher Columbus, sailing on blue wavy waters beneath a radiant rising sun. The shield is supported by a flamingo, the national bird of The Bahamas, and a blue marlin, the national fish. Above the shield is a conch shell before a spray of palm fronds, symbolizing the country's rich marine life and natural vegetation. Below appears the national motto: "Forward, Upward, Onward Together".
