Léon Gaud, born in Versoix in 1844 and died in Les Eaux-Vives (Geneva) in 1908, is a Swiss painter active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. A pupil of Barthélemy Menn in Geneva, a central figure of the Geneva school, he trained in a high-level artistic milieu and, under his master’s direction, participated in decorating the Knights’ Hall of Gruyères Castle, where he came into contact with artists such as Camille Corot.

From 1862 he regularly exhibited at Geneva art events, and in 1902 he succeeded Menn as director of the School of Fine Arts of Geneva. His career was crowned in 1900 by a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exposition.

His production focuses mainly on intimate landscapes and rustic scenes, often set in the surroundings of Lake Geneva. His works reflect a poetic sensibility and a humanitarian outlook on rural life, with a painting language close to the Barbizon tradition and French naturalism.

The present painting depicts a peasant life scene animated by figures and domestic animals, at the foot of a building. The composition is built with a free and vibrant brushstroke, where forms emerge through warm and harmonious color juxtapositions. The intimate atmosphere and the golden light give the work a particularly evocative character.
