Diana and Callisto (Jupiter disguised as Diana seduces the nymph)

Refined mythological scene in a neoclassical taste that depicts a less common episode drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses: the seduction of Callisto by Jupiter, in the guise of the goddess Diana.

The composition unfolds in an intimate, suspended atmosphere, where the gesture of the false Diana — really Jupiter — is charged with a sweet, ambiguous, deeply narrative softness. Callisto, unaware of the deception, is caught in a moment of abandon, while small putti on the left subtly allude to the amorous dimension and to the imminent fate.

Unlike the more frequent representations, which illustrate discovery and punishment, here we are before a rarer and more sought-after moment: the phase of seduction, treated with elegance and sensitivity, typical of 18th-century French painting. Lightly tinted flesh tones, soft draperies, and an airy landscape contribute to creating a balanced and decorative scene, with references to the Rocaille area production and to the first neoclassical accents.

On the right, the opening of the landscape with figure and horse introduces a secondary narrative element that broadens the reading of the scene, while at the bottom right a heraldic crest is visible, probably referring to noble patrons or to an aristocratic collection. This detail, in addition to its identifying function, underscores the cultivated and prestigious character of the work.
