Fascinating and rare pair of small cast and hand-chiseled bronze busts depicting the faces of boys/putti with their gaze directed upward. The soft facial features, clearly defined wavy curls, and the draped garment across the neck are typical elements of the high Venetian bronze craftsmanship from the late 16th to the 17th century. This type of decorative bronzes fits fully within the circle and stylistic models of the sculptor Niccolò Roccatagliata (Genoa 1560 – Venice 1636 approx.), renowned for his production of putti and cherubs. Originally, these items were conceived as highly valuable functional elements for grand parade-ornaments (such as important handles, knobs, or decorative rivets for chests, doors, or monumental portals), while today they appear as splendid artworks for collectors or tabletop sculptures. They display a magnificent natural dark patina developed over time.
