Coffee table - Onyx, Metal - Translucent Orange Onyx

Elegant and particularly unusual Belgian coffee table from the twentieth century, consisting of a golden metal frame inspired by neoclassical design, topped by an extraordinary natural orange translucent onyx rectangular top.

The top is indisputably the most important element of the piece. The stone displays an intense orange-amber/caramel hue, traversed by a complex network of black, grey and white veining, forming a natural pattern of strong visual impact. Its appearance resembles varieties commercially known as Orange Onyx with Black Vein, precisely characterized by the deep orange background, dramatic black veining and light stripes. Each slab of this material is naturally unique.

The most exceptional feature is its translucency: when backlit, the top acquires an extraordinary internal glow, shifting from the warm orange-brown tones seen without illumination to a deep golden amber, while the dark veins become more defined. This property is characteristic of calcitic onyx and explains its contemporary use in luxury interiors and backlit surfaces. Technically, it is an ornamental calcite stone – the so-called onyx marble – and not the siliceous onyx used in jewelry.

The base presents a neoclassical Louis XVI/Empire-inspired language, with a upper band ornamented by a regular succession of relief ovals, two architectural supports with fluted and vegetal elements, blocks decorated with rosettes and four long curved feet enriched with acanthus and scrolls. The two supports are joined by an elegant fluted horizontal crosspiece, reinforcing symmetry and the architectural character of the composition. The gold finish features a pleasant patina, highlighting the depth of the fused and chiselled elements.

The combination of translucent natural stone and classical brass or bronze structures was particularly appreciated in European luxury production.

Show signs of use and patina compatible with age. Color variations, lines, veining and small irregularities visible in the onyx are part of the stone’s natural formation and decisively contribute to the piece’s unique character. Small chips, essentially at the corners, caused by use, without affecting the structure.
