Description from the seller
Prestigious scepter of Baoulé/Akan ethnic style. This object of authority stands out for the high quality of its sculpture and exceptionally refined goldsmithing work. At the apex, an anthropomorphic representation of an ancestor or a dignitary seated in a posture of wisdom on a traditional single-block Akan stool. Detail of the figurine’s face in the Ivory Coast canon, typical of Ivory Coast sculpture. The metalwork is exceptional: the spherical pommel at the base is entirely covered with a wrap of brass wire of perfect regularity; the dark wooden shaft is adorned with brass discs and scrolls delicately inlaid with wood flowers. Very good overall condition with no loss to the brass; the wood presents a superb satin patina with natural and harmonious discolorations attesting to its past handling. Total height 39 cm; a great aesthetic finesse, ideal for enriching a tribal art collection or as a characterful decorative piece. Small perforation in the left hand likely allowed the reception of a few small sacred attributes. A rare piece of great beauty brought back by my brother from a trip to the northern Côte d’Ivoire, in Baoulé style.
