A black lacquered wooden chinoiserie commode dating from probably the 18th century, with two drawers, in a rococo-inspired European antique style.
Description from the seller
European lacquered commode, chinoiserie, probably southern Germany
An elegant, black-lacquered and gilded chinoiserie commode with two drawers, executed in a graceful, Rococo-inspired form.
The piece is richly decorated with refined chinoiserie landscapes in warm gold and ochre tones against a deep black background. The drawer fronts, the fluted lower edge, the sides and the cabriole legs feature a continuous decor of pavilions, garden architecture, stylized trees, birds, figures in traditional dress, railings and rocky landscapes. This creates a particularly lively and decorative overall effect. Some landscape elements are subtly embossed, adding depth and texture to the scene.
The rectangular, profiled top rests above two full-width drawers. Both drawers are equipped with an old-style lock and a round knob. The gracefully shaped lower edge flows smoothly into four elegantly curved cabriole legs, which are also adorned with gilded floral motifs.
The commode has a beautifully aged surface, with natural wear, craquelé, localized loss of gilding and varnish, and signs of use around the edges, drawer profiles, knees, and feet. These traces of age and use greatly contribute to the character and authenticity of the piece and have deliberately not been restored.
The drawers are made of solid wood and have, on the inside, an attractive, warm patina. The overall design reflects the long-standing European fascination with Chinese decorative arts and combines Western furniture proportions with a rich, hand-painted chinoiserie decor.
A atmospheric and highly decorative piece of furniture that can be excellently used as a side table, bedside cabinet, hall piece, or as a characterful accent in a contemporary interior.
