Large polychrome porcelain bowl decorated with the Eight Immortals and dragons

Glazed porcelain, polychrome enamels on glazed surface
H. 9 cm – Ø 27 cm
Shallow bowl with a brown lip, exterior wall decorated with two sinuous dragons weaving among stylized clouds and flames in green, yellow, iron red and aubergine enamels.
The interior shows, on a crackled ground, the Taoist Eight Immortals (Ba Xian) arranged in a circle around Budai, the laughing monk, seated in the center before a stylized landscape. Each Immortal is depicted holding his distinctive attribute—flute, fan, basket of flowers or gourd—in a lively, colorful composition.
This type of porcelain, produced in the kilns at Nanking at the end of the Qing dynasty, is characterized by its crackled glaze, black-edged outlines, and translucent bright enamels, reflecting a popular production influenced by the wucai famille verte patterns of the Kangxi period.
