Description from the seller
MECCANO COMPLETE SET No. 0–3 (SPANISH EDITION) – ORIGINAL BOX, ORIGINAL INSTRUCTION MANUAL, INTERIOR PRESENTATION COMPLETE AND EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION FOR CONSERVATION
A magnificent and very rare Meccano Complete Set No. 0–3, corresponding to a Spanish-era edition, is offered at auction, preserved in an extraordinarily attractive state for collectors of antique toys, recreational engineering, and Meccano historical material.
This set stands out for the preservation of virtually all elements that have usually been lost over the decades: original box, original instruction manual in Spanish, interior arrangement, original protective papers, and an internal two-level presentation that allows the set to be viewed almost as it left the factory.
Meccano, created by Frank Hornby in the early 20th century, revolutionized the concept of educational toys by allowing the construction of real mechanical models with standardized metal parts. For decades it was regarded as one of the world’s most advanced engineering toys and a true instrument for technical learning for generations of boys and engineers.
This copy belongs to a period particularly prized by collectors due to the quality of piece fabrication, the luxury presentation of the sets, and the growing scarcity of complete copies preserved to this level.
MODEL IDENTIFICATION
Brand: Meccano
Model: Complete Set No. 0–3
Country: Spain
Manual language: Spanish
Estimated period: 1940s–1950s
Materials: Painted steel, brass, nickel-plated steel, cardboard, and printed paper
ORIGINAL BOX
The set retains its original illustrated box, a hugely important element for collectors.
The lid retains the attractive vintage lithographed label with the classic Meccano illustration and the model identification “Complete Set.” The colors remain vibrant and the print is clearly legible.
The box shows outstanding preservation considering its age, with a solid and stable structure. Only light signs of use and storage compatible with the passage of time are observed.
The corners show small wear and slight deformations typical of a piece over eight decades old, with no major tears or visible restorations. These details are normal and to be expected in a collectible item of this era.
The bottom part also preserves its original features, including labels and historical distribution marks.
ORIGINAL INTERIOR PRESENTATION
One of the most notable aspects of this lot is the preservation of the original interior layout.
The contents are presented through a two-level organization system that allowed efficient storage of parts by size and function.
This configuration is especially appreciated because in most surviving sets the interior organization disappeared due to continued use.
The original arrangement helps understand how these sets were marketed in their era and provides significant historical and museum value.
FIRST LEVEL
On the upper level are various elements carefully organized:
Original instruction manual.
Meccano accessories.
Original cords and threads.
Perforated metal plates.
Structural elements.
Original storage compartments.
Notably, the preservation of the original protective papers that accompanied some pieces is remarkable.
These papers rarely survive due to their fragility and were typically discarded in the early years of use.
Their presence constitutes an important sign of the overall excellent conservation of the set.
SECOND LEVEL
The lower level houses most of the mechanical components of the system:
Metal wheels.
Pulleys.
Perforated discs.
Angles (brackets).
Supports.
Structural elements.
Screws.
Nuts.
Washers.
Special transmission parts.
Many parts remain perfectly ordered in their original compartments.
Some have not been disassembled from their historical location for decades, preserving a presentation close to the original.
ORIGINAL INSTRUCTION MANUAL
The original instruction manual for sets No. 0 to No. 3 is included.
The manual is a fundamental piece of the set and is in exceptional condition.
The covers retain excellent visual presence.
The inner pages remain complete and display the original construction diagrams clearly.
The illustrated models show numerous examples of machines, vehicles, mechanisms, structures, and technical constructions that could be made with the contents of the set.
For a manual of this age, its conservation can be regarded as outstanding.
OVERALL CONSERVATION
Very good to excellent condition for its age.
Notable aspects:
✓ Original box preserved.
✓ Original manual preserved.
✓ Original interior organization.
✓ Two-level system complete.
✓ Original protective papers present.
✓ Very good visual presentation.
✓ Set difficult to find in this condition.
✓ Excellent piece for collection or display.
Only normal signs of aging compatible with a historical piece are visible:
- Slight wear on some corners.
- Small storage marks.
- Natural aging of paper and cardboard.
- Minimal signs of use consistent with age.
These do not affect the overall presentation or the collectible value of the set.
HISTORICAL AND COLLECTIBLE INTEREST
Complete Spanish Meccano sets from this period are increasingly scarce on the international market.
Most preserved copies show missing parts, missing manual, modern substitutions, or significant box deterioration.
The simultaneous presence of:
- Original box,
- Original manual,
- Protective papers,
- Internal layout,
- Factory organization,
- Two storage levels
makes this copy particularly attractive to demanding collectors.
It also constitutes an excellent display object for toy museums, historical engineering collections, or Meccano-specialized collections.
NOTE TO COLLECTORS
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an essential part of the description and show in detail the actual conservation state of the set, interior organization, included pieces, and overall quality of the lot.
An exceptional opportunity to acquire an authentic Spanish-era Meccano, extraordinarily well preserved, with a presentation that is hardly replicable on today’s market.
