Powerful ritual mask of the Bamileke from the Batcham region in the Cameroonian grasslands. The prominently split forehead with ribbed texture, the stylized wing- or ear-like elements, and the smoked-back side point to use in cult dances. These masks – also known as Tseesah – were worn horizontally on the head and symbolically represent a being between human and animal, perhaps inspired by insect heads or winged creatures. The tactile detailing and soot traces suggest real use in royal ceremonies.
