In this lot, a large molar of the Mammuthus meridionalis species is being auctioned, colloquially known as the Southern Mammoth.
Perfect preservation, crown crests on the wear surface, smoothed by wear from the animal's use.
It is a spectacular piece; it’s impressive to hold it in your hands.
It comes from Pest County in Hungary, dating to the Pleistocene between about 2.5 to 2 million years ago.
M. meridionalis is one of the earliest mammoth genera, standing about 4 m tall at the shoulders and with an estimated weight of 10 to 11 tons, making it one of the largest proboscideans to have lived.
Its molars had low crowns and between 10 and 14 thick enamel ridges, adapted to a forest diet of leaves and branches.
The most recent records of this species date to about 125,000 years ago.
