A set of four early 18th-century, identical and richly carved chairs, manufactured during the Dutch Baroque period around 1700-1725. Such chairs are also known as “high-back” chairs due to their long vertical backrest. The design of seating furniture changed drastically around 1690-1700, among other influences from the designs of the French architect, interior designer and engraver Daniel Marot (1661-1752). He published several designs for seating furniture and lambrequins from his "Second Livre d'Appartement", plate 6, issued in 1703.

The chairs are constructed entirely from solid walnut wood and are largely joined with pegged mortise-and-tenon joints. Close-ups clearly show these joints, as well as traces of hand saws, planes, chisels & gouges! The chairs are extremely richly and finely decorated with turnings and symmetrical carving of curving acanthus leaves, floral, shell- & lambrequin motifs. The vertical backrest and ornament placed on the front rail, between the baluster-style front legs, are fully ornamented with openwork.

From one of the chairs, two stretchers and the ornament on the front rail were once expertly recreated. Across the chairs, there are traces of old woodworm attack. This is no longer active and has caused no structural damage! Across the four chairs, small pieces of the turned stretchers have broken off. All of these have been photographed separately.

The chairs have been newly upholstered relatively recently with the current dark blue velvet and entirely in the style with tassels.
Over 300 years the chairs have developed a beautiful warm orange-brown color, patina and satin sheen!!!

For shipping, the piece is carefully packed! With bubble wrap, sturdy thick cardboard and/or foam sheet, wrapping film and placed on a Euro pallet with at least two straps! Please note that delivery is performed by one person/driver and only to the ground-floor front door! If you have delivery wishes, live on an island, etc., please contact us.
