The Rollei 35 was the smallest 35mm camera in the world at its debut. It was developed by designer Heinz Waaske starting in 1962. Production began in 1966 at Rollei.

Waaske managed to create a shirt-pocket camera (width 9.7 cm × height 6 cm × depth 3.2 cm, about 375 g) without forgoing the prevalent 35mm film along with the film cartridge.

The Rollei 35 has only about one third of the volume of 35mm cameras of its time, while delivering comparably high performance. The focal length of the retractable, non-interchangeable lens was shortened to 40 mm for space reasons; the standard was a 50 mm normal lens.

It remains today the smallest fully mechanical camera for 35mm film cartridges. The Minox 35, introduced in 1974, is about the same size, but significantly lighter at about 200 g due to the use of plastic and electronics.
