Description from the seller
An eye-catcher from the design history of the 1980s
This lot contains a beautiful and highly collectable set of two authentic vintage IKEA wooden candlesticks from the early 80s.
With their vibrant, playful and theatrical appearance these hand-painted objects are a striking example of the postmodern Memphis movement, which strongly influenced IKEA's design team at that time.
Craftsmanship
In contrast to today’s machined mass production, this set formed part of a special historical production line in which IKEA collaborated with local artisans. Each candlestick was individually hand-carved and painted in Sri Lanka with non-toxic paint, making each piece unique. The colorful motif shows detailed clusters of purple grapes, bright red berries and rich green leaves against a dark background.
The set is in excellent vintage condition. The colors are still vividly bright and the paint shows only minimal signs of age and use. Very important for collectors: the original paper IKEA stickers on the bottom are fully intact and perfectly legible. They bear the official article number (965.006.95), the supplier number (11678) and the stamp "Made in Shri Lanka".
