This lot contains a beautiful and highly collectable set of two authentic vintage IKEA wooden candlesticks from the early 80s.
With their vibrant, playful and theatrical appearance these hand-painted objects are a striking example of the postmodern Memphis movement, which strongly influenced IKEA's design team at that time.
Craftsmanship
In contrast to today’s machined mass production, this set formed part of a special historical production line in which IKEA collaborated with local artisans. Each candlestick was individually hand-carved and painted in Sri Lanka with non-toxic paint, making each piece unique. The colorful motif shows detailed clusters of purple grapes, bright red berries and rich green leaves against a dark background.
The set is in excellent vintage condition. The colors are still vividly bright and the paint shows only minimal signs of age and use. Very important for collectors: the original paper IKEA stickers on the bottom are fully intact and perfectly legible.
