Description from the seller

Antique pocket watch "Verge Fusee" with Verge Fusee escapement - Paris (Boucher / Barbier l'ainé) - Period 1700s/1800s

For auction, a magnificent and rare French antique pocket watch endowed with the famous and fascinating Verge Fusee escapement. The watch features superb artisanal workmanship: opening the case reveals the caliber with the balance cock (coq) masterfully hand-engraved and the signature of the Paris watchmaker "Barbier l'ainé". Curiously, as was often the case with timepieces of this historical period, the enamel dial bears a different signature ("J.ques Boucher"). The old movement is fully functional, making this lot an excellent opportunity for collectors of historical watchmaking. Please study the attached photographs, which are an integral part of the description, to assess the enamel dial's condition.

Main Details
Period: Late 18th / Early 19th century

Type: Antique console pocket watch with Verge Fusee escapement

Movement: Manual-wind mechanical with key. Signed on the plate "Barbier l'ainé à Paris" (Serial 68545). Beautiful balance cock (coq) finely cut and engraved with floral motifs, with silver regulator dial.

Dial: White enamel, signed "J.ques Boucher A PARIS". Arabic numerals for hours and outer minute track (5-60). Elegant gold hands with cut-out style in the Louis XV/XVI fashion. Winding-hole at 2 o'clock. It has a defect near the 5 o'clock position.

Case: Plain and convex, typical of the period (material to be specified if silver hallmarked or metal).

Condition of the Item
Movement Condition: The movement is perfectly functional, a rare and highly valuable detail for a watch of this antique mechanism. The watch opens with a front hinge to reveal the caliber.

Dial: The original enamel dial shows evident hairlines and signs of age (visible in the photos), entirely consistent with the over two centuries of age of the item.

Case: In good overall condition, with normal signs of wear and a beautiful antique patina. Hinged closures functioning, no crystal.

Accessories: winding key not included.
