Two-toned neoclassical alabaster cup onyx with mascarons – 19th century

Elegant and scenographic centerpiece alabaster bowl, veined, dating from the 19th century, executed in the neoclassical taste and characterized by a particularly decorative workmanship.

The cup features a wide circular basin supported by a tall turned and molded foot, set on a stepped circular base. Of particular charm are the two carved mascarons opposed to each other, resembling sylvan faces surrounded by leaves, which serve as side ornamental elements and give the object a strong sculptural character.

The material used is very beautiful: a light alabaster intensely veined, crossed by spectacular irregular gray-anthracite veins. The natural chromatic heterogeneity of the stone creates a ever-changing pattern on the surface and is particularly evident on the broad basin, making every perspective of the object different.

The form, the symmetrical arrangement, the architectural foot and especially the phytomorphic mascarons fully recall the neoclassical and Grand Tour decorative repertoire of the nineteenth century, when cups and stone objects were used to embellish important display rooms.

Dimensions: height 17.5 cm; maximum width about 27 cm; diameter of the cup 22.5 cm; diameter of the foot 12.3 cm. Weight: about 1,800 g.

Condition

The object shows several imperfections, small losses, abrasions and chips, particularly visible along the rim of the cup and in the most projecting and carved parts of the mascarons. Normal surface marks and traces compatible with age and the delicacy of the material are also present. The joint between cup and support shows visible traces, as documented in the photographs.

These characteristics do not, in our view, compromise the remarkable decorative impact of the piece and are consistent with an antique object made from naturally delicate stone. Please therefore study all photographs carefully, which are an integral and essential part of the description and document in detail the state of conservation.

The bottom part of the foot has been protected with felt, useful for both support and preserving the surfaces of furniture.

The neutral tone of the alabaster and the deep gray veins allow a particularly successful integration not only in classic and neoclassical environments but also in contemporary, eclectic and minimalist interiors, where the contrast between the antiquity of the object and modern lines can make it a true focal point.
