Description from the seller

A Victorian walnut-veneered graphoscope, second half 19th century, the folding rectangular base supporting an adjustable inclined viewing board with sliding picture rest, surmounted by a large circular convex magnifying lens within a shaped walnut-veneered frame, adjustable on twin brass rods with turned pale finials, the reverse with shaped hinged support engaging with a series of graduated stops, with brass hinges and fittings throughout.

The graphoscope folds flat for storage and was designed for the magnified viewing of photographs, prints and other flat images. The graphoscope measures 45x25x9cm when folded.

In good antique condition, with expected surface wear, minor marks and patination consistent with age and use. A surface crack is present to the walnut veneer beside the lower end of the central adjustment slot; this is confined to the veneer and is not structural. The lens remains in good condition with minor age-related wear. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed assessment of condition.
