Description from the seller
PROPOSED LOT TITLE:
Navy Official Blazer - America's Cup 1983 / 1987 - Lluvia SanRemo Team - Original Vintage - Rare
CATEGORY: Sports Memorabilia - Sailing / America's Cup
*EXPERT DESCRIPTION:*
I present an original men’s blazer titled "Equipe Lluvia SanRemo - Azul Edition America's Cup" dating back to the historic first Italian challenge to the America's Cup (1983, Newport).
Historical Context:
In 1982 Gianni Agnelli and the Aga Khan, through the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, manned Azzurra (I-4), the first Italian boat to participate in the America's Cup.
Skipper Cino Ricci, helmsman the Olympic Mauro Pelaschier.
Azzurra achieved Italy’s first historic victory against France III and finished 3rd in the Louis Vuitton Cup, inaugurating the myth of Azzurra-mania.
SanRemo, with the Equipe Lluvia line, was the official land apparel licensee for the team between 1983 and 1987 (I-4 challenges and later I-10 / I-11 in Perth).
The Badge:
- Model: Single-breasted blazer, 2 buttons, 2 patch pockets and a high chest pocket, tartan Black Watch pattern (midnight blue / bottle green / black), typical of yacht-club fashion of the 1980s.
- Inner label: "Equipe Lluvia SanRemo SR" with a BlueAzzurra sailboat logo printed on a light blue background, clearly legible.
- Buttons: original gilded enamel buttons with Azzurra logo / stylized sail, branded SanRemo. Fully preserved.
- Material: wool / wool-blend heavy fabric (no composition tag present), lined in dark blue satin.
- Color: blue base with Scottish green pattern.
- Provenance: private collection, kept since about 1985 in a wardrobe with moth repellent, not worn in the last 35 years.
Conditions:
Excellent vintage condition.
No stains, holes or tears.
Intact lining.
Structured shoulders without deformities. Buttons well attached.
Slight scent of preservation, but not strong; requires only steaming.
Estimated grade: 8/10 for age.
Measurements:
Italian size indicative 48/50 / M/L, unfortunately no internal tag present.
On request I will provide precise measurements: shoulders, chest, sleeve length, overall length.
Rarity and Value:
This is not a modern reissue, but original era merchandise, now rarely found.
Highly sought after by sailing memorabilia collectors, Azzurra fans, and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
Similar items from the same line (polo shirts, raincoats) have reached on Catawiki (and other auction platforms I cannot name) between €200 and €300.
A valuation is requested for potential listing in an America’s Cup / Vintage Sport / Vintage Men’s Fashion dedicated auction.
Detailed photos attached: front of jacket, button detail, inner label, lining, pocket detail.
