Julia Münstermann (1977) - Beijing de Tiankong

Julia Münstermann's paintings revolve around light and visualization problems. Her coats of paint result in a transient sheen, a surface that on the one hand creates a sense of depth, while on the other confronts the viewer with an impenetrable barrier; a hermetic refusal of the usual reference. Because she fails to provide a central motif, the seamless transitions and the endless depth of these paintings are disorienting and rather reinforce the sense that we are looking at absolute non-representation. And yet we stand there, by ourselves, in a strange way staring into their cool emptiness.

Münstermann (born in Cologne) is currently a fellow of the Kunstfonds Arbeitsstipendium 2021. She studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Prof. Jörg Immendorff and Prof. Jan Dibbets. She then earned her MFA at De Ateliers 63 in Amsterdam. She has recently also undertaken residencies in New York and Beijing, China.

The work of Munstermann is shown internationally at DESY, Hamburg; Nali Nali Art Space, Beijing; De Vleeshal, Middelburg; Gemeente Museum Den Haag; Autocenter, Berlin; DadaPost, Berlin; as well as Galleries CosarHMT, Düsseldorf and Aschenbach&Hofland, Amsterdam. Her work has been discussed in, among others, NRC Handelsblad, RBB television and the art magazine Junge Kunst. Her paintings are in private and public collections such as Deutscher Städtetag, Köln Sparkassen Informatik, Frankfurt and the Caldic Collection, Netherlands.
