Saint Clare of Assisi with the Blessed Sacrament – 17th century
Religious painting on copper, probably from the 17th century, depicting Saint Clare of Assisi in the Clarissan habit, nimbated and holding before her the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance.
This iconography, particularly widespread from the 17th century onward, refers to the episode in which Saint Clare, then ill, would have faced the troops threatening the monastery of San Damiano, presenting the Eucharist. The monstrance thus becomes her major iconographic attribute.
The saint is shown from the waist up, with an inclined, softly expressive face, dressed in sober brown, beige and white tones characteristic of the Franciscan world. She holds with care an architecturally shaped monstrance, topped by a small dome, at the center of which the consecrated host is clearly visible.
The painting presents a particularly interesting surface, evident in the treatment of the face, the hands and the drapery. The dark background accentuates the contemplative nature of the composition and highlights the face as well as the gilded monstrance.
