In this vibrant work by Corneille we see several of his most recognizable motifs coming together: a woman, a cat and birds, surrounded by plants and vivid colors. The large yellow background creates a warm, sunny atmosphere, while red, blue and green stand out strongly. With thick black outlines and simple, playful shapes, Corneille creates a fantasy world in which human, animal and nature seem connected. The cat almost seems to leap through the image and the birds move freely around the woman, giving the composition a lot of energy and movement. This combination of women, cats and birds is characteristic of Corneille's later figurative work.
Corneille, full name Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922–2010), was a Dutch artist who was born in Liège and was one of the founders of the international CoBrA movement. He sought, like other CoBrA artists, a free and spontaneous way of working and was inspired, among others, by children's drawings and artists such as Paul Klee. Travel, especially to Africa, also had a great influence on his art. Later he developed the very recognizable visual language of bright colors, bold lines and recurring figures such as women, birds, cats and other animals.
