Vintage Palmtag electric mantel clock – Made in Germany – copper-colored Mid-Century design – about 1950–1960

A particularly decorative and distinctive German Palmtag mantel clock from the 1950s/60s, executed in a beautiful warm copper tone. The combination of the large round dial, black raised hour markers, gold-colored hands, and the sculptural foot makes this a true showpiece from the Mid-Century era.

This clock is also convincingly identifiable: the original electric movement is labeled Palmtag, Made in Germany and 220V – 50Hz – 3W.

Palmtag was a German clock manufacturer from Schwenningen. The auction house Quedlinburg notes that Uhrenwerke Jacob Palmtag was founded in 1875 and ceased to exist in 1970. The same auction house documents electric Palmtag mantel clocks from circa 1960 with a Made in Germany movement and connection for 110/220 volt. Other documented Palmtag clocks from the 1950s and 1960s also used 220V electric movements.

The design of this specimen is particularly strong. The round, almost numerals-free dial has twelve individually applied black hour indices. The slender gold-colored hands stand beautifully against the copper background.

Under the clock, the design continues into an almost sculptural composition. On the left is a cylindrical form, while on the right a large curved C-shape gives the piece a playful and typically postwar modernist character. This makes the clock not only a timepiece but also an attractive design object for a sideboard, desk, or display cabinet.

The back of the movement is equipped with a transparent protective cover, keeping the mechanism visible. Here the important original markings are clearly legible:

Condition

The clock is in a beautiful authentic vintage state. The copper-colored surface has an attractive natural patina of age with some locally dark spots, discoloration, scratches, and signs of use. It is precisely these traces that give the object its characteristic 1950s/60s appearance.

The transparent cover of the movement also shows signs of use and scratches. Please study the detail photos carefully; they form an important part of the description.
