JAPAN. 20 Sen. 1899. Emperor Meiji (1867-1912)

- Value: 20 Sen.
- Reign: Emperor Meiji (1867-1912).
- Year: 1899.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: 大日本・明治三十二年・20 SEN. Reverse: 二十錢.
- Grade: MS62 (GBCA-EU).

Silver 20 Sen coin minted during the thirty-second year of the Meiji era. The obverse features a majestic Japanese dragon coiled around the facial value “20 SEN,” surrounded by the legend with the country’s name and the date in Japanese characters, in a design of great dynamism and a wealth of detail characteristic of the early issues of modern Japan. The reverse shows the value “二十錢” in Japanese characters in the center, surrounded by a crown formed by paulownia branches and chrysanthemums joined by a ribbon at the top, with the imperial chrysanthemum at the bottom as the emblem of the Imperial House. The specimen retains an attractive original luster with a uniform light gray-silver patina, well-defined reliefs and clean fields with slight surface marking typical of its grade, consistent with MS62. This issue belongs to the monetary reform undertaken during the reign of the Meiji emperor, a period of profound political, economic, and industrial modernization that transformed Japan into a modern power, and whose coins are noted for the quality of their engraving and technical execution.
