Born in Cuba in 1902, Wifredo Lam (1902–1982) is one of the major figures of 20th-century art. A friend of Pablo Picasso and close to André Breton, he developed a unique artistic language, blending Cubism, Surrealism and Afro-Cuban heritage. His works are today preserved in the most prestigious international collections, notably the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
