Five pieces of Welo Opal from Ethiopia, burattato freeform, total weight 2 g with about 2 carats per gem, supplied in one protective pouch/box.
Description from the seller
This lot consists of 5 pieces of Ethiopian Welo Opal rough, with a total weight of 2 grams (equivalent to 10 carats).
This set has a higher value since the weight is concentrated on only 5 stones, meaning the individual pieces are larger and have a higher average gemstone weight (about 2 carats per gem).
# Lot Description and Features
Close-up images highlight a beautiful variety of shades and types of opal typical of the Welo region:
* Play of Color:
The iridescence is exceptional and highly intense. Under direct light, strong flashes of neon green and fire orange/red activate.
One piece shows a concentrated fire in small bright points distributed in a “mosaic” or pinfire pattern, while another piece (the more amber) presents a flash effect that covers almost the entire surface.
* Body Tone Variety:
The lot offers a complete spectrum: includes a very transparent Crystal Opal with green reflections, a cream/ milk-colored piece that is more opaque and shows a nearly pearl-like and iridescent surface [mTMjGW], and a Honey Opal with a warm, transparent caramel-colored base that enhances the red reflections.
* Shape and Condition:
The nodules have been cleaned of the outer rocky crust and partially faceted into freeform shapes. Only minimal natural inclusions or tiny dark spots are present on a couple of pieces, which do not detract from the stones’ beauty.
This is an excellent lot for both collectors and for a craftsman, since the approximately 2-carat size per piece is ideal for direct set into rings or pendants without the need for further drastic cutting.
*Not being an expert, I leave it to those with expertise to provide the correct assessment of whether the lot is natural mineral or synthetic*
