Box - Wood, enamels, brass

Chinese-made jewelry box (Shanghai), dating from the late 20th century (roughly the 1970s/1980s), complete with its original period label.

The lid is adorned with a stunning cloisonné enamel inlaid plaque, finely handcrafted with metal filigree and vibrant enamels on a deep blue ground, delicately worked into stylized cloud-like motifs (cloud wirework).

The scene depicts an elegant, colorful pheasant perched on a stylized volcanic rock, surrounded by lush fully-blooming peonies (shades of red, pink, and cream). In Oriental decorative tradition, the pheasant symbolizes nobility and harmony, while the peony is the supreme emblem of prosperity, wealth, and beauty.

Structure and Details:
- Solid hardwood structure with a dark rosewood/murdered? mahogany finish.
- Front closures and hinges in brass, worked/engraved in the traditional style, equipped with a slot for a small decorative padlock.
- Interior: Fully lined with refined red damask/brocade silk bearing classically inspired floral motifs, divided into a main compartment and a raised section with shaped ring/earring holders.
- Base: Still bears the original intact paper label with the trilingual inscription (中国上海 - Made in Shanghai, China - Fabriqué à Shanghai, Chine).
