Decorative ornament (2) - Italy - Find meaning

Two authentic carved wooden pieces depicting two sphinxes or phytomorphic figures. They were probably used to adorn sacristy furniture, where they decorated pieces called 'bambocci' furniture. They show a patina of age and have never been restored as it was unnecessary. They measure 40 x 10 x 25 cm.
