Belgium. Philip the Good. Lion d'or 1420

Golden lion struck in Burgundian Netherlands during the reign of Philip the Good (1419–1467), Duke of Burgundy, specifically for the County of Flanders (struck at Ghent or Bruges).

Avers: A heraldic lion seated facing left beneath a Gothic canopy of stalls, flanked on the left and right by the letter B (for Burgundia / Bourgogne). Legend: PHILIPPUS DEI GRATIA DUX BURGUNDIE COMES FLANDRIE (Philip, by the grace of God, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Flanders).

Revers: A shield-quartered with the arms of Burgundy (modern Burgundy, ancient Burgundy, Brabant and Limburg) surmounted by a shield of Flanders at the center, set on a large floriate cross. Legend: SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM (Blessed be the name of the Lord).

Dimensions and weight: The specimen measures 3.93 g for 30.02 mm, is immaculate and aligns very precisely with the original theoretical weight (about 4.25 g at the start, often slightly worn to around 3.9 g to 4.0 g).

Condition (Very Very Fine / TTB): The coin displays very well-preserved details, notably the lion’s mane, the Gothic canopy, and the reverse arms. See photos
