This Portuguese Baroque Revival desk, carved from chestnut, dates from the second half of the 19th century.
Description from the seller
Portuguese ornate secretary, executed in chestnut wood, richly carved, inspired by Baroque / King D. João V, produced in the second half of the 19th century. Rectangular body with a narrowed waist, profusely decorated with exuberant high-relief carving, featuring vegetal scrolls, shell motifs, angel masks, and sphinxes, characteristic elements of the Portuguese 19th-century Baroque revival. Stands on four elegantly curved legs, ending in claw-and-ball feet. The front presents a dynamic cutout following the waistline, while the sculptural decoration continues along the uprights and the saial, conferring great richness and a remarkable theatrical effect. The top is framed by a beaded frieze, with sober lines contrasting with the exuberance of the carving. A piece of high artistic and technical quality, representative of the Portuguese historicist taste of the second half of the 19th century, intended for interior ceremonial furniture. Dimensions: 85 × 130 × 89 cm. Condition: Shows signs of use compatible with age, including minor wear, scratches, and marks of use. Maintains good structural integrity and quality of carving. The presence of sphinxes and angelic figures integrated into the decoration is uncommon in ordinary Portuguese secretaries and brings the piece closer to productions of workshops specialized in ceremonial furniture, where sculptural richness was favored over functional simplicity. The quality of the carving, the depth of relief, and the balance of composition suggest work from a workshop of good standing.
