Description from the seller

Origin. Côte d'Ivoire
Tribe. Senoufo
Material. Wood
Size. 52 cm
Shipping method. Colissimo within 24–48 hours

This remarkable Senufo statue (the Senufo people are primarily from Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso), carved from wood, has a dark patina and a range of traditional stylistic and iconographic features:
Posture and morphology: The figure depicts a woman seated on a small, low stool. Her posture is hieratic, with an elongated torso, angular shoulders, and prominent, pointed breasts. Her rounded belly is accentuated by raised geometric scarification marks, a feature often associated with fertility, motherhood, and vital force.
Ornaments and scarification: The body is adorned with incised patterns and finely detailed scarification marks (particularly on the face, forehead, torso, and arms), attesting to the meticulous sculptural work and respect for Senufo aesthetic conventions.
Headdress and head ornaments: The head is crowned with a monumental, elaborate headdress or crest that projects to a point above the face and flares out at the sides into stylized ear-like shapes or protuberances. This imposing head ornament reinforces the spiritual dimension, rooted in the ritual traditions of Senufo initiation societies such as the Poro.
Hands and arms: The arms follow the contours of the body, with the hands resting on or framing the thighs in a posture of contemplation or dignity.
The piece as a whole exudes a strong sculptural presence, combining the geometric rigor of its forms with the delicacy of its engraved details.
