Description from the seller

Origin. Democratic Republic of the Congo
Tribe. Hemba
Material. Wood
Dimensions. 36 cm
Shipping method. Colissimo within 24–48 hours

This Hemba statuette (art originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo) displays remarkable stylistic features and a strong sculptural presence.
Morphological and stylistic analysis
The headdress and head: The piece features a large head topped with a structured crescent- or helmet-shaped headdress, decorated at the back with raised geometric patterns (incised interlocking triangles or chevrons, visible in the rear view).
The face: The features are expressive and stylized. The almond-shaped eyes are half-closed, beneath arched eyebrows. The nose is broad and straight, while the mouth is sharply defined, with thick, parted lips.
The body and posture: The neck is cylindrical, long, and powerful. The shoulders are broad and rigid. The arms are bent at either side, with the hands characteristically positioned near the rounded abdomen.
Anatomical details: The torso has a pronounced central bulge marked by a scarification or vertical incision at the sternum. The statuette has pronounced male attributes (the genitals are visible between the bent legs).
Patina and condition: The wood has a rich, aged, dark-brown patina, glossy in places, bearing witness to ritual handling and the passage of time. Wear, age cracks, and traces of wood-boring insects can be seen on the base and extremities, enhancing its authenticity. The piece is mounted on a modern black display stand.
Note: In Hemba tradition, this type of statuette (often associated with ancestor worship or figures of authority) is distinguished by the serenity and nobility of its facial features, combining idealized naturalism with great geometric strength.
