Sundial - Brass - Germany - 1700-1750

Rare octagonal pocket equatorial sundial in brass and maillechort/silvered nickel, signed by the famous master instrument maker Johann Martin (1642–1721) in Augsburg (Germany), late 17th or early 18th century.

Characteristics:
Signature: Hand-engraved on the upper plate “Johan Martin in Augspurg”.

Scientific elements:
Foldable equatorial circle with hourly graduation.
Foldable arc/limb of latitudes, graduated from 10° to 80°.
Original central compass under glass with steel needle and gravings of cardinal points.

Back: Latitudes table, carefully engraved, listing the coordinates of more than 30 major European cities (Paris, Rome, London, Augspurg, Constantinople, Stockholm, Prague, etc.).

Casket: Supplied with its original octagonal leather-covered hinged case.

Condition:
Very good overall aesthetic condition with an authentic old patina.

Important: The small style/gnomon fixed at the center of the traverse of the equatorial circle is missing (simple restoration for a specialist).

The original case shows wear marks and aging consistent with its age (more than 300 years), but remains structurally sound.
