Spanish school (XIX) - Sagrado Corazón de Maria

Description of the work

This is a Corazón de María (bust of the Virgin with the flaming heart pierced by a sword and bound with roses), a devotional theme very commonly repeated in Spanish and Hispano-American religious painting, almost always paired with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is also sold separately.

Support and technique: oil on a coarse-weave canvas (heavy jute/hemp), stretched over a wooden frame with a central crossbar, nailed with antique forged nails — a typical 19th-century construction.

Condition: this is the most relevant point for appraisal, and it is not good:
• There is a marked horizontal fold/wrinkle running across the entire composition at chest height — caused by rubbing against the frame crossbar — which has craquelé and displaced the painted surface along that line.
• Several holes and losses of canvas are visible (small square gaps in the weave), possibly from rubbing.
• Oxidized varnish and surface dirt darken the background, flattening contrasts.
• The gilded frame is period with losses of gold leaf and wear — consistent with the painting, but also deteriorated.

stylistic appraisal

The execution is correct but of a popular/devotional, serial type: soft modeling of the face, reduced palette (crimson, earth tones, black in the background), no signature visible. This is characteristic of workshops or anonymous painters who produced this type of religious images in the dozens for convents, parish churches, or private devotion, mainly in Spain or Hispano-America, 19th century.
