Timeless elegance transformed into engineering. Official document and representation of the Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, the most refined and powerful version of the renowned W113 series, presented in the late 60s as the culmination of a concept that united sportiness, safety and sophistication. Universally known as the “Pagoda” for the characteristic concave shape of its rigid roof, this model became a symbol of style and distinction.

The 280 SL Pagoda represents Mercedes-Benz’s vision of a modern roadster: solid, balanced and technologically advanced for its time. Its design, the work of Paul Bracq, pursued clean lines, harmonious proportions and a sober elegance that avoided excess. The iconic “Pagoda” roof, in addition to its aesthetic value, met structural and safety criteria, reflecting the brand’s obsession with technical innovation.

Under its long hood lay an inline-six of 2.8 liters with mechanical fuel injection, capable of developing around 170 hp. Paired with a four-speed manual—optional automatic—and tuned for dynamic comfort, it offered smooth, progressive and refined driving, without sacrificing respectable performance for its era.

The chassis, derived from the brand’s sedans, and the inclusion of deformable zones demonstrated a forward-looking approach to safety. The 280 SL was not a radical sports car, but a balanced grand touring car, designed to cover long distances with elegance and poise.

Between 1968 and 1971, the 280 SL established itself as the most desirable version of the W113 saga, especially in the American market. Today it is one of Mercedes-Benz’s most admired and sought-after classics: a piece embodying German sophistication of the 60s and a era in which luxury and sportiness coexisted naturally and in style.
