Description from the seller

The work in the image is a miniature Indian painting in the Mughal Empire style, traditionally handmade on silk or fine paper. This specific art genre flourished in India between the 16th and 19th centuries, although many paintings currently available on the antique and collectibles market are vintage reproductions or 20th-century recreations that maintain traditional techniques.

Characteristics of the Work

Subject
The scene depicts a moment of courtly entertainment and leisure. In the center sits a noble or ruler (recognizable by the distinctive Mughal turban and regal attire) together with a female figure inside a pavilion. Around them, a group of women (maids of honor or court musicians) play traditional instruments and provide entertainment in a finely decorated courtyard. The piece features the typical two-dimensional perspective and the meticulous details of traditional Indian costumes (sari and ghagra choli). The bottom shows a geometric checkerboard pavement, while the outer frame is adorned with stylized floral motifs. 9
