Set of 3 Chinese ginger jars – horsemen in armor – crackle glaze – Chenghua mark

A particularly decorative set of three Chinese ginger jars in ascending sizes, executed in a classic cream crackle glaze and richly decorated around with vivid scenes of warriors, horsemen, horses, banners and figures in traditional clothing.

The three jars form a strong ensemble: each jar has its own depiction, but the color palette, glaze and design complement each other beautifully. Red, green, yellow, blue and black stand out powerfully against the warm ivory-colored background. The dark bands around the shoulder and base give the whole piece extra depth and a distinctly Asian appearance.

This type of ceramics is typically placed within the tradition of the so-called Nanking/Nankin crackle ware: Chinese export porcelain in which a deliberately crackled glaze was combined with polychrome figurative scenes. Similar jars and vases with riders and warriors are regularly offered on the art and auction market in this tradition.

On at least one jar, a four-character mark is visible at the bottom that corresponds to 成化年造 – Chenghua Nian Zao, literally translated as “made in the Chenghua period.” Important: such Chenghua marks were reapplied centuries after the historical Ming Emperor Chenghua as an apocryphal or tribute mark, and therefore do not indicate that the object actually dates from the 15th century. Similar crackle-glaze objects with warrior decoration and a Chenghua mark are usually dated considerably later, often around the late Qing, Republican, or early/mid-20th century.
