Object Type: Pair of table candlesticks (Paire de flambeaux de table)
Style / Period: Louis XIV / early Régence (Haute Époque)
Origin: France
Material: Solid sand-cast brass (laiton)
Height: 24 cm
Base Dimensions: approx. 11.5 × 11.5 cm
Weight: 404 grams per candlestick (approx. 808 grams total)

Rare pair of French Louis XIV / early Régence candlesticks with fine hand-punched decoration – France, ca. 1700–1720
A museum-quality and exceptionally well-preserved pair of solid cast brass table candlesticks (flambeaux de table à base carrée) from the Haute Époque period.
Style & Details
The candlesticks feature a crisp, stepped square base with molded borders that transition smoothly into an architectural baluster stem. Directly beneath the flared candle nozzle (binet) is a molded collar cold-finished with fine geometric punched / knurled decoration (décor au poinçon / moleté).
This refined detail is rare on brass candlesticks; it is directly inspired by the luxurious Parisian court silver models of the Louis XIV era. Centuries of gentle polishing have softly smoothed the relief, yet it remains distinct and beautifully legible throughout.
Authenticity & Construction
Original Riveted Construction: The stems are secured beneath the base using the authentic 18th-century method: a solid cast tenon peened (riveted) over a serrated steel/brass lock washer (rondelle crantée d'arrêt). No later screw threads, modern threaded rods, or repairs.
Undrilled: Both pieces are completely intact and have never been pierced or converted for electrical wiring (non percés).
Casting & Finishing Traces: The hollow underside of the base displays classic 18th-century craftsmanship: rough sand-cast surfaces with distinct manual rasp and file marks, alongside an undisturbed, ancient layer of oxidation.
A beautifully preserved, highly collectible pair of early French candlesticks with a warm luster and an untouched historical character.
