Tsar Nicolas I, (1825-1855), commissioned the construction of a rail line between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. It opened in 1851 after 10 years of construction. The line, some 403-miles long, was at the time the longest double-tracked railroad in the world. This route became known as the "Nicolas Railroad". The railroad was financed by a combination of government and private capital, which much of the private money coming from investors in Western Europe, particularly France, England, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Much of the "Nicolas Railroad" was destroyed during World War II. It was subsequently rebuilt and has been upgraded several times since and is one of the busiest rail lines in Russia, carrying both freight and passengers.
