Author

The plaque is the work of 程门 (Cheng Men), one of the leading masters of the Qing late period Chinese literati painting on porcelain.

Cheng Men developed a production characterized by the integration of traditional techniques of Chinese literati painting with the ceramic support. His landscapes are distinguished by the use of diluted ink, grays, greens, ochres, and other soft tones, employing expansive white porcelain surfaces to create atmospheric depth.

His oeuvre constitutes one of the most important expressions of Jingdezhen porcelain painting in the 19th century.

Signature and seal

The plaque bears the signature 雪笠 (Xuělì), an artistic name used by Cheng Men.

Next to the signature is the red seal 松生 (Sōngshēng), also associated with Cheng Men’s artistic identity.

The combination 雪笠 / 松生 constitutes the artist’s identification of the piece and directly links the decoration to Cheng Men.

Inscription

In the upper right corner there is a vertical inscription in Chinese characters:

天气晚来秋

Tiān qì wǎn lái qiū

The inscription corresponds to the second line of the famous poem 山居秋暝 (Shān jū qiū míng) by 王维 (Wang Wei):

空山新雨后,天气晚来秋。

Aproximate translation is:

“After the rain, the mountains are quiet; in the late afternoon, the air brings autumn.”

The choice of this verse is directly related to the landscape depicted on the plaque.

Decoration

The composition presents a traditional Chinese literati landscape consisting of:
- mountains and rock formations;
- trees and vegetation;
- pavilions and buildings;
- water and open spaces;
- figures;
- a boat;
- landscape elements typical of the literati painting tradition.

The composition deliberately uses large expanses of white porcelain as an atmospheric space. The mountains and vegetation are built with fine brushstrokes and ink washes, while greens, ochres and other enamels provide a very restrained palette.

This combination is a hallmark of the 浅绛彩 language, whose aesthetics seek to translate the expressive freedom of ink-and-color painting onto ceramic support.

Stylistic features

The work embodies several characteristic elements of Cheng Men:
1. Literati landscape.
The composition is not merely decorative, but linked to a classical text of Chinese literature.
2. Predominance of ink.
Mountains, trees, rocks and water are built primarily with varying intensities of gray and black.
3. Muted color.
Greens, ochres and warm tones appear as complements to the ink-based structure.
4. Empty space.
The expansive white surfaces play a compositional role equivalent to the empty space in traditional Chinese painting on paper.
5. Calligraphy and seal.
The literary inscription, the 雪笠 signature, and the 松生 seal integrate painting, calligraphy and seal in a single composition, following the tradition of Chinese literati.

Chronology

The piece belongs to the late Qing, within the 浅绛彩 painting of the second half of the 19th century.

Cheng Men’s activity is mainly situated in this period, and his production is particularly related to the development of Jingdezhen porcelain painting during the Tongzhi and Guangxu reigns.

The plaque corresponds to the artistic milieu of the Guangxu period, in the second half of the 19th century.

Material and support

Support: Jingdezhen white porcelain.
Decoration: enamels over glaze and ink painting applied onto the glazed surface.
Palette: black, gray, green, ochre and small applications of other colors.
Format: square plaque intended for display.

Condition

The plaque preserves the full pictorial composition. It shows surface wear, accumulated dirt and losses of intensity in certain areas of the decoration and calligraphy.

The edges show signs of use and minor damage, particularly at the corners and peripheral areas.

The central decoration nevertheless retains the overall reading of the composition and clearly allows recognizing the landscape, inscription, signature and seal.
