Nandi, Shiva's bull
South India
18th–19th century
Copper alloy
Representation of Nandi, the sacred bull of Hindu tradition and mount (vāhana) of the god Shiva. The animal is depicted lying, the legs folded under the body, in an attitude that is both hieratic and peaceful. It rests on a high rectangular moulded base, whose construction gives the whole the appearance of a small shrine image.
With its head raised, ears spread, and vertical horns, the animal’s presence is accentuated. The neck is richly adorned with several collars and incised ornaments, while a stylized covering emphasizes the withers. The synthetic treatment of volumes, coupled with a rhythmic decoration of beaded and incised motifs, is characteristic of the production of cult bronzes in India.
In Shaivite iconography, Nandi occupies an essential place. Guardian and faithful servant of Shiva, he is traditionally installed in temples facing the sanctum housing the lingam, toward which his gaze is directed. He embodies devotion, fidelity, and restrained strength.
Condition: The surface shows a fine layer of varnish, applied by the former owner to revive and protect the metal, giving this coppery orange color. Very ancient patina and mineralisation under the base with traces of wear and oxidation.
