Description from the seller
A distinctive and solidly crafted Spanish / African church door panel
The panel is made of solid wood and on the front richly divided into several sunken panels with hand-carved geometrical and religious ornamentation.
In the center there is a clearly defined cross, surrounded by stylized circular, floral and geometric motifs.
Particularly attractive is the strongly lived-in, dark surface. Through centuries of wear, locally warm brown tones of the wood have become visible. This irregular patina gives the object a pronounced archaic character.
The back is also interesting. Here the old construction method, heavy stiles and rails, joints, repairs and long-standing worm activity are clearly visible. These signs of use and age fit an object that has indeed been part of an interior for a very long period.
The panel has been carefully cleaned, with the old look and patina consciously preserved. There are old worm traces and local damages/losses present, in keeping with the presumed age.
Please refer to the detail photographs for this.
An impressive piece of Spanish folk religious art and church interior, which, due to its size, simple yet powerful ornamentation and ancient appearance, is also particularly decorative as a standalone wall piece.
Function: according to tradition a door/panel from a Spanish confessional booth
Material: solid wood
Condition: authentic, heavily used state with old wear, worm traces, repairs and losses; carefully cleaned with preservation of patina.
Dating is a reasoned attribution based on construction, design and visible age characteristics and has not been confirmed by dendrochronological analysis.
