artigianle - Doll - 1920-1930

Two boudoir dolls made between the 1920s and 1930s. Boudoir dolls were not children's toys, but genuine pieces of furniture for fashionable women, who often placed these objects in the bedroom or, indeed, in the boudoir, the Lady's private sitting room. The body of these dolls was usually made of cloth to allow for a wide range of poses.
The larger head is made in full composition (pressed cardboard or treated gesso/marmorina) with a mohair wig and a hand-painted face with features typical of the era (flapper/Art Déco style). The painted gesso or pressed cardboard head shows natural signs of aging, and some detachment at the base of the neck, while the face bears hand-painted details with red heart-shaped lips, expressive eyes, and wavy light brown–blonde mohair hair.
The smaller head in the typical Art Déco style has a face with the characteristic hand-painted features, very flushed cheeks, red heart-shaped lips and dark hair in mohair, resting on a gauze or fabric base. The conditions show signs of aging on the supporting fabric, while the face maintains its expressive flapper-style look from the 1920s.
This type of doll (boudoir doll) was very popular in the interwar period, today a collectible object.
