Albert Carel Willink (1900-1983) - Zonder titel

This etching by Carel Willink shows a monumental building, seen from a park-like setting with a classical statue in the foreground. Above the building unfolds an impressive, almost cosmic sky with heavy clouds, stars and a large planet-like form. Through the extremely fine hatching and the strong contrast between light and dark, a mysterious and somewhat ominous atmosphere arises. The combination of precisely depicted architecture, classical sculpture and an unreal sky is characteristic of Willink's visual world: the individual elements look realistic, but together they form a disquieting, dreamlike reality. Classical imagery, monumental architecture and threatening cloudscapes are among the recurring motifs in his oeuvre.

Carel Willink (Amsterdam, 1900–1983) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and graphic artist and is regarded as one of the leading representatives of Dutch magical realism, although he himself preferred to call it “imaginary realism.” After short studies in medicine and civil engineering he moved to Berlin, where from 1920 to 1923 he, among other things, studied under Hans Baluschek and initially experimented with expressionism and abstraction. From the late twenties Willink developed the extremely precise, realistic painting method for which he became chiefly known. Monumental buildings, classical statues, deserted landscapes and dramatic cloudscapes recur regularly and give his works their characteristic enigmatic atmosphere. In addition to his paintings Willink also produced drawings, illustrations and graphics.
