Description from the seller
Primitive Painter - London, 1960s
Original Vintage Silver Gelatin Darkroom Print by Michael Joseph
A wonderfully eccentric portrait from Michael Joseph’s early London years.
Seated at his workbench, spectacles slipping low, the painter glances towards Michael’s camera, surrounded by the brushes, bottles, pots and pigments of his profession. Strong blacks, brilliant whites and a dramatically positioned chair turn the cluttered workshop into something unexpectedly cinematic.
Painter, pigments, paraphernalia and personality - Michael transforms a simple working portrait into a wonderfully graphic study of character, craft and creative chaos.
This is an original vintage darkroom print, mounted, titled “Primitive Painter London 1960s” and signed by Michael Joseph.
The reverse adds wonderful provenance, retaining Michael’s 18 West Central Street, London WC1 studio label, Michael Joseph Pictures stamp and a period “Art Work by Commercial Process” label dated 31/8/64 - surviving traces of its working photographic life.
