DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
We are offering at auction a vibrant and intense mixed-media on paper, dating from the 1970s, created by Ernesto Treccani, one of the undisputed fathers of poetic realism and a key figure in Italian visual culture and intellect of the twentieth century. Our gallery collaborated with the Master from 1969 to 2009 (the year of his death). Treccani participated in numerous group shows and thematic exhibitions at our gallery.

In this "Male Figure," we find the unmistakable expressive urgency of the artist. Treccani, always deeply connected to the exploration of man and of feelings, defines the subject’s face and posture through a rapid, swirling, and intimately lyrical mark. The use of mixed media allows the Master to blend drawing with vibrant chromatic accents, creating a work that is not merely a portrait but a profound exploration of the human condition.

BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL NOTES ON THE ARTIST
Ernesto Treccani (Milan, 1920 – Milan, 2009) was an Italian painter, intellectual, and poet, a leading figure in the history of art and culture of the twentieth century. Son of Senator Giovanni Treccani (founder of the famous encyclopedia of the same name), at eighteen he became one of the founders and organizers of the magazine and the movement "Corrente." This circle established itself as one of the main centers of cultural opposition and antifascism, gathering intellectuals and artists such as Renato Guttuso, Renato Birolli, Bruno Cassinari, and Aligi Sassu.

After actively participating in the Resistance, his postwar painting oriented toward social and peasant realism, deeply tied to popular struggles (his famous sojourns in the Mezzogiorno, in Calabria). Over the decades, while never abandoning his civil commitment and deep love for humanity, Treccani’s language evolved toward increasingly lyrical, chromatic, and expressionist forms, often fusing poetry and painting. His faces, flowers, figures, and landscapes became an ode to the joy of living and to the vital force of nature.

Throughout his long and prolific career he exhibited in countless editions of the Venice Biennale and in the most prestigious institutions in Italy and abroad. He founded the Corrente Foundation in Milan, still a very active cultural center, and his works are present in major modern art museum collections.
