Description from the seller

Superb element of ecclesiastical architecture or liturgical furniture (corbel / cul-de-lampe or a retable element) in softwood carved in high relief, depicting a sacred pastoral scene, most likely a shepherd from the Adoration of the Shepherds.

The figure, wearing a rustic hat and a short tunic, holds his staff in one hand and blows into a horn of announcement. At his feet rests a sheep in a setting of carved foliage.

Material: Monoxyl wood (a single block of softwood).
Finish: Remnants of original polychromy (green patina, ochre/red) and traces of gold leaf.
Era: 19th century (neo-Gothic).

State of conservation: Beautiful patina of use, natural wear and gaps in polychromy consistent with age, sound structure and very healthy wood. No heavy recent treatment.

Iberian Peninsula (Spain) or, by cultural proximity, the Southwest of France / Pyrenees.

A very decorative piece of popular sacred art, with a raw and authentic charm.
