Description from the seller
Paskaert Van de Zeeusche en Vlaemsche Kusten, tonende alle drooghten, diepten, en ondiepten, tusschen't eylandt Schouwen en de Hoofden
Nautical chart (diptych). Uncoloured copper engraving. Each sheet measures 43 x 47 cm.
General good condition but no upper margin and a little paper missing in the upper middle
1667
This magnificent diptych depicts the entire Belgian coastline, as well as small portions of France, England and the Netherlands. It covers the region from Calais to Noord-Beveland and includes the principal towns of Dunkirk and Bruges. The chart shows soundings, sandbanks, rhumb lines, two compass roses, five decorative ships and two coats of arms. An elaborate cartouche containing the scale is surrounded by a triumphant triton and mermaids holding navigational and cartographic instruments.
This chart is an updated version of the original chart by Dirck Davidszoon and was published in Goos’s work, “De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Weereld”. It has been preserved in its original uncoloured state, highlighting the delicacy of Goos’s engraving. Light overall patina with slight colour offsetting. A few small tears to the edges. Complete original margins.
Pieter Goos (1616–1675) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer and print dealer based in Amsterdam. He came from a renowned family of cartographers, his father Abraham being at the head of the family business. He produced the plates for numerous charts published in the major atlases of the period. His navigation guide, the “Zee-Spiegel”, contains some of the earliest charts of newly explored regions of the West Indies and West Africa, while his “Zee-Atlas” is considered one of the finest nautical atlases of its time.
This chart is a fine example of the high quality and visually attractive character of Goos’s nautical charts.
