Description from the seller
Napoleon III Jewelry Box – France, second half of the 19th century – Ebonized wood, brass and cabochons
Elegant French jewelry box from the Napoleon III period, dating probably to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1860-1880.
The box is made of ebonized wood, particularly appreciated under the Second Empire, and features rich applied decoration in gilded brass. The lid is centered by a large raised oval medallion depicting a gallant scene in the eighteenth-century taste, framed by scrollwork ornaments.
The four corners are adorned with turquoise-blue cabochons, mounted in elaborately worked brass settings. Small ivory-toned cabochons complete the composition around the central medallion.
The front is equipped with an ornate lock entry, and the perimeter of the box is also punctuated by small decorative brass elements, giving the overall presentation a particularly refined finish typical of the historicist taste of the Napoléon III era.
Origin: France
Period: Napoléon III / Second Empire
Estimated dating: around 1860-1880
Materials: ebonized wood, gilded brass and decorative cabochons
Good overall condition considering its age, with some signs of use, scratches and wear from time. One small foot is missing beneath the box, to note.
